Happiest of Birthdays!

Here's a very, very brief story - call it a triple drabble. 332 words.

Jack/Daniel

(Just post "Forever in a Day")

Here's a very, very brief story - call it a triple drabble. 332 words.

Jack/Daniel

(Just post "Forever in a Day")

"It's funny." Daniel looked at the bottle of beer growing warm in his hands.

Jack looked up from tending his steaks, where he muttered about well-done and blasphemy. "What is?"

"We had a year. And I thought it would be forever. Even when..." He took a drink. American beer, weak and disgusting, but it didn't matter. "Even when she had that child, his child...I thought I would love her forever. I promised her I'd love her forever."

"Yeah, well. Promises like that...we all make them." He turned the steaks, dusting them with more black pepper, and handed Daniel a fresh bottle from the cooler. "I did, once. They don't count as lies, you know, if you mean them." He looked Daniel in the eyes.

"I..." Sometimes Daniel wondered how deeply Jack could see. "I got a chance - that day. I got a chance to be with her as equals. We never were equals, you know? And I could. I could. I could say good-bye."

"Yeah. I know." Jack took a drink from his own bottle. "It's not going to stop, you know. You can still love her. Even if. Even if you find someone else." He licked his lips, as if he were nervous. "Or if someone else found you." He wiped his hand on his jeans and reached to touch Daniel's arm.

Daniel didn't understand at first, and then he did. And then it didn't make sense.

And then it did.

"Are you sure? Are you...so many problems, regulations, rules..." He covered Jack's hand with his own.

Jack smiled, a smile Daniel had never seen before. "Since when do I worry about those?" He leaned forward, taking off Daniel's glasses, and then, before he could protest, or think to protest, he kissed him. And Daniel, who didn't know he'd dreamed of this until just then, kissed back.

"I can't promise forever." Daniel back just enough.

"Just promise me right now."

"I can do that." And they let the steaks burn.

Awww. :D So sweet, and gentle, and deeply romantic. I can see this Daniel, right on the cusp of moving on, not quite mourning, not quite moving forward. All he needed was that wee push, Jack's hand on his arm.
(I'll bet Jack didn't mind eating his well-done crispy-burnt steak, after, either. He would've needed the protein for energy! *g*)

THank you so much for this, Mama. Your J and D make me want to hug them. And you. :D
